Mali/Algeria: Is there a link between the recent terrorist attacks and the statement by the Algerian head of diplomacy?

“The Malian crisis does not require a military solution. It is a conflict between brothers. The resolution can only be political”. This was a statement made by Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, during a press conference. His remarks come in the wake of recent intense battles fought by the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) against terrorist groups. These clashes were instigated by a coalition of terrorist forces in northern Mali, specifically at the border with Algeria.

Are the Algerian authorities hiding something ? Why would they not want the lawless rebel criminals, who have been threatening Malians for over a decade, to be fought and eradicated for good?

In reality, the statements from the Algerian Foreign Minister increase suspicions among Malian and African public opinion regarding Algeria’s involvement in Mali’s security crisis. Algeria has been cited as one of the allies of these enemies of peace in Mali, allegedly serving as a rear base for them.

Furthermore, the insistence of the Algerian authorities on clinging to this peace agreement, deemed ineffective by those most affected, also raises questions. These authorities act knowingly about the security situation in Mali, as after nearly nine years since the signing of this agreement, no positive outcome has been achieved.

The rebel and criminal groups have continued to massacre security forces and civilians of the Republic of Mali, leading to multiple coups d’état in this West African country. This is a way for Algeria to downplay the severity of the conflict and conceal the schemes orchestrated by external powers and their allies, of which it might be a part.
