Mali has set an ambitious agricultural goal, aiming to increase its cereal production by nearly 700.000 tons by 2025. This strategy seeks to strengthen food security and support the national economy, which heavily depends on agriculture.
Maize is the country’s primary cereal crop, accounting for an average of 41% of total supply between 2019 and 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It is followed by rice (21%), millet (20%), and sorghum (17%), all of which play a crucial role in local food security and the economy.
To achieve this ambitious goal, the Malian government is implementing several initiatives, including increasing arable land, improving access to agricultural inputs, and enhancing irrigation. These measures are expected to boost productivity and reduce reliance on food imports.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain, such as climatic variability and issues with logistics and distribution. However, authorities remain optimistic about the country’s ability to meet its goals, relying on increased mobilization from agricultural sector stakeholders.
