Mali: The Promising Role of Nuclear Energy in Mali’s Energy Diversification According to Mr. Mamoudou Sissoko

Nuclear energy could play a potential role in Mali’s energy diversification and energy independence, according to information from a recent ministerial delegation in Moscow. According to Mr. Mamoudou Sissoko, nuclear energy offers considerable economic and strategic benefits for Mali.

From an economic point of view, the adoption of nuclear energy in Mali would make it possible to diversify energy production, thus reducing dependence on current fossil fuels. Although initial construction costs are high, long-term operating costs would be relatively low, which would stabilize electricity prices. In addition, the construction and operation of nuclear power plants would create local jobs and stimulate the nuclear technology industry. Mali could also consider exporting electricity, generating additional income and employment opportunities.

Strategically, nuclear energy would enhance energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports. It would also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promote technological and scientific development, and strengthen Mali’s diplomatic influence as a nation with peaceful nuclear technologies. In addition, training the local workforce and involving local suppliers would create educational and employment opportunities.

However, there are also challenges related to nuclear energy, including radioactive waste management, high initial construction costs, safety, and the need for significant investments. Before committing to the development of nuclear energy, Mali should conduct a thorough assessment of the advantages and disadvantages, while establishing strict safety standards.
