Messi’s 2022 World Cup jerseys are expected to surpass 10 million dollars at auction
Six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be auctioned off in December, announced the auction house Sotheby’s on Monday. The lot is estimated to be worth nearly 10 million euros.
These shirts were worn by the Albiceleste captain during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the Argentine team secured their 3rd title in history. Specifically, they were worn during the initial periods of the group stage matches against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, as well as in the knockout stage matches against Australia (Round of 16), the Netherlands (Quarter-finals), Croatia (Semi-finals), and France in the final.
If the estimate exceeding 10 million dollars is accurate, this set of six jerseys, presented as «pieces of football history», could break a record and become the most expensive sports item ever sold.
At present, this record is held by a Chicago Bulls jersey worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals. It was sold last year for 10.1 million euros (9.24 million euros).
A portion of the proceeds from the sale, which has not been specified, will be allocated to the «Unicas» project. This initiative supports a Barcelona hospital specialized in rare diseases affecting children.
