NIGER : DENUNCIATION OF THE MILITARY AGREEMENT WITH THE UNITED STATES. WHAT DO PAN-AFRICANISTS THINK ?

Bekki Benameur weighs in on the latest developments in the Sahel region, particularly in Niger, which has just decided to terminate military cooperation with the USA « with immediate effect ». Speaking by phone to our editorial team, the Algerian opinion leader praises what he calls a « strong and historic decision » by a state asserting its choice of sovereignty.

« It is time for the Western powers to understand that African states have moved beyond the stage where they must submit to international orders established by those who want to shape the world in their own way. The young African generation and visionary Heads of State who have come to power in the three countries of the Economic Community of Sahel States (ECSS) reject this paternalistic attitude of the major powers who want everyone to align with their positions », Mr. Benameur asserts. According to him, this is evidence of a growing consciousness on the continent.

« While Niger is certainly a land of hospitality, it ultimately belongs to the Nigeriens; it is they alone who are the masters of their destinies and have the full right to decide their diplomacy, whether to please a partner or not », he points out, adding, « just as Niger cannot impose its demands on the USA, this country is also obliged to respect the choices of the Nigerien people »,As for the fight against terrorism, which some believe will suffer a serious blow after the departure of US troops, the panafricanist questions: « What has changed in Africa, particularly in the Sahel, since these European and American countries established their military bases and deployed their troops in countries plagued by terrorism and rampant banditry? »

« I particularly commend the war strategies developed by transitional leaders. Look at the fine example recently set by Mali, which achieved in a few months what foreign troops had been unable to do for several years. I believe that the liberation of Kidal should be a source of inspiration for all countries affected by insecurity. When there is strong determination and a good war plan, coupled with high-performance equipment, even the toughest challenges can be overcome », Bekki Benameur indicates.

In conclusion, the panafricanist invites all citizens of the ECSS, particularly those in Niger, to embrace the vision of the transitional leaders and firmly support the decisions made in this journey towards the total sovereignty of the country and the well-being of the Nigerien people.
