The Governor of the Diffa region, Brigadier General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma, chaired the official ceremony on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in Goudoumaria, marking the 6th wave of repentant Boko Haram members. This event represents a key step in the reintegration process of former insurgents in Niger.

A total of 124 repentants, including 81 ex-fighters and 44 minors, received their certificates of exemption from prosecution. This document paves the way for their reintegration into society.

Governor Bagadoma reminded everyone that the deradicalization and reintegration program is part of a proactive policy initiated by the Nigerien state. “This initiative aims to reduce the social consequences of armed conflicts and promote inclusive socio-economic development”, he said. He also praised the repentants, calling them ambassadors of peace, and encouraged them to work for reconciliation and reconstruction.

Mr. Malan Goni Ibrahim, National Coordinator of Stabilization Programs, emphasized the importance of the choice made by these repentants. “Laying down arms is a courageous act. You now bear a responsibility toward those who remain in the bush” he affirmed, urging the former fighters to encourage their comrades to join the peace process.

This collective effort, supported by local and international partners, includes contributions from security forces, community and religious leaders, and organizations such as the Garkua NGO. These stakeholders provide essential moral and spiritual support to the repentants.

The event also highlighted the crucial role of local authorities in promoting social cohesion. The delegated administrator of Goudoumaria, Hamidou Moussa Yayé, expressed his gratitude to national authorities for their efforts toward stabilization.

This ceremony represents a significant step toward lasting peace in the Diffa region, long affected by violence. The deradicalization program, by fostering reconciliation and development, demonstrates Niger’s commitment to ending the insurgency and strengthening social cohesion.
