Under the leadership of President Abdourahamane Tiani, Niger has firmly asserted its sovereignty, rejecting any form of external interference. A striking example of this stance is the government’s decision to independently manage the aftermath of recent flooding without relying on international humanitarian aid.

This was emphasized by Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, who highlighted the government’s choice to use its own resources to address the disaster, underscoring the country’s financial independence and its refusal to depend on conditional or imposed aid.

This sovereign approach faced opposition from the European Union (EU) Delegation in Niamey, which sent unsolicited aid through non-governmental organizations (NGOs) without prior consultation with Nigerien authorities. This action was viewed as disrespectful, prompting the government to summon the EU ambassador and, in response to the continued unauthorized actions, demand the ambassador’s immediate recall. This incident reflects Niger’s firm determination to uphold its sovereignty and strategic choices.

Despite this, Niger remains open to collaborating with international partners, provided the relationship is based on mutual respect, dignity, and the interests of its people. Under President Tiani’s leadership, the country confidently paves its own path, reaffirming its role as a sovereign and respected actor on the global stage.
