Nigeria: Poetry Festival celebrates Afrofuturism and the digital age

The Abuja International Poetry Festival held its inaugural edition in the Nigerian capital, providing a unique platform for poets, researchers, and artists from across the continent. Organized by Nasara Creative, the event highlighted the richness of African culture, explored through the lenses of Afrofuturism and digital technology.

Over the course of three days, participants delved into the role of poetry in a rapidly changing world. The festival’s founder, Bash Amuneni, explained, “We aim to connect African culture with the future, using modern tools like artificial intelligence.” The theme of Afrofuturism sparked discussions about the evolution of African art. The festival director, Orewa Olujimi, posed a key question: “What will poetry look like in a few years, in this new digital age?”

The festival’s program featured masterclasses, knowledge-sharing sessions, and debates on various topics, including the role of language in Afrofuturism. The poets also shared their thoughts on the impact of digital technology, particularly in how it is changing the publication and distribution of poetic works.
