Sahel: AES strengthens its drive for security and development

0

Since the creation of the Sahel States Confederation (AES) in July 2024, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have continued their commitment to political, military, and economic autonomy. This alliance marks a decisive turning point in regional cooperation, strengthening the sovereignty of the member states in the face of security and strategic challenges.

On the defense and security front, AES has made significant progress. The operationalization of a regional joint force is now a reality, with coordinated actions being carried out on the ground. One of the most notable operations, “Yèrèkoko”, deployed in the Three Borders area, led to the neutralization of several terrorist groups and restored security in many localities. This success highlights the effectiveness of intelligence sharing and the pooling of military resources among the three countries.

AES’s security approach is not limited to military operations. It also focuses on strengthening intelligence services and increasing cooperation between the armed forces. This strategy aims to sustainably secure the population and restore state authority in areas that have long been affected by insecurity.

Beyond security, AES aims to establish economic and political independence. The bloc is working to create endogenous financial mechanisms to reduce dependence on international institutions and promote development based on local resources. Agricultural, mining, and industrial initiatives are already underway to ensure the self-sufficiency and prosperity of the member states.
