Sahel: Launch of AES passports, a new stage in regional integration
The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) has taken a decisive step in its integration process with the official announcement of the launch of its passports, effective January 29, 2025. This decision was made public by the Burkinabe Minister of Communication, Gilbert Pingdwendé Ouédraogo, through an official statement.
The AES passport represents more than just a travel document. It embodies the member countries’ commitment to strengthening their unity, promoting the free movement of citizens, and building a solidary community to face common challenges. This new tool will facilitate the movement of citizens of the member states, reducing administrative barriers and consolidating the spirit of cooperation that drives the Confederation.
In his statement, the President of the AES specified that the old passports of the member states will remain valid until their expiration date. This measure aims to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any inconvenience for citizens who wish to travel or complete administrative procedures.
The introduction of the confederate passport is part of the roadmap adopted by the AES, which focuses particularly on the free movement of people, goods, and services within the confederate area. By facilitating exchanges and interactions between citizens, this initiative aims to strengthen the economic, social, and cultural ties between the member countries.
With this initiative, the Confederation of Sahel States sends a strong message to its citizens and the rest of the world: a steadfast commitment to unity, sovereignty, and shared development.
