Supercup of Spain: after a crazy match, Real Madrid overthrow Atlético in the semi-final
In a thrilling match, the Real Madrid emerged victorious in a “derby” held in Saudi Arabia against the Colchoneros in extra time (5-3). Griezmann, the new all-time leading scorer for Atlético, wasn’t enough.
At the end of a derby held in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), nearly 5.000 km away from Madrid, Real Madrid had the final say against Atlético (5-3 after extra time) in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup.
The Merengues scored the winning goal four minutes from the end, with a Stefan Savic own goal (116th minute, 4-3), followed by an insignificant counterattack finished by Brahim Diaz into an empty net (120th + 3, 5-3). Antoine Griezmann, who became Atlético’s all-time leading scorer with a fine right-footed strike in the 37th minute (2-2), wasn’t enough.
Yet, Real Madrid found themselves trailing on two occasions (0-1 and then 2-3) and were just five minutes away from elimination. However, as is often the case when facing adversity in a knockout match, they managed to pull through with a three-part strike from Dani Carvajal (85th minute, 3-3) to force the game into extra time.
This back-and-forth began with a goal from Mario Hermoso (7th minute, 0-1) on a corner, answered by Antonio Rüdiger in a similar fashion (20th minute, 1-1). The Merengues then took the lead with a goal from Ferland Mendy (29th minute, 2-1), before Griezmann equalized.
