Togo : Dates for the upcoming legislative and regional elections are now known

The Togolese government has officially announced the dates for the upcoming legislative and regional elections during the council of ministers held in Lomé on Thursday, February 8th. By decree, the elections are set for Saturday, April 13, 2024, marking the beginning of the electoral process in the country.

In accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Code, early voting for members of the defense and security forces, paramilitary forces, and operational reserve will take place 72 hours before the general voting day. This measure aims to ensure the security of citizens during the election and to maintain peace in a concerning security context.

The campaign period for these combined elections will start at midnight on Thursday, March 28th, and will close on Thursday, April 11th at 11 : 59 pm, extending over a duration of 15 days. This window will allow candidates to present their programs and meet with voters across the country.

Regarding participation fees, the government has set the amount of the deposit to be paid by each candidate. For the legislative elections, this amount is set at 500.000 CFA francs, while for the regional elections, it is set at 200.000 CFA francs. It is important to note that these amounts are halved for female candidates, in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Code, with the aim of promoting women’s participation in the political process.

This announcement marks an important step in the preparation for elections in Togo and underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and democratic electoral process. The coming weeks will see candidates intensify their efforts to convince voters and make their voices heard in the legislative and regional bodies.
