Togo: Gnassingbé Eyadema airport expands to strengthen its role as a regional hub
The Gnassingbé Eyadema International Airport (AIGE) in Lomé, already modernized in 2016, is set to undergo a new phase of expansion. This ambitious project, discussed in the Togolese National Assembly during the review of the 2025 Finance Bill at the end of December 2024, aims to strengthen airport infrastructure and consolidate Togo’s position as a logistical hub in West Africa.
The main goal of these works is to increase the airport’s capacity in order to streamline passenger traffic. Plans include the expansion of waiting areas, adding an additional 500 seats. This improvement will help manage passenger flows more effectively, including those departing, arriving, or in transit. Togolese authorities aim to increase the annual number of passengers from 1.4 million to 2 million, reflecting the country’s ambition to establish itself as a leading air hub.
The extension also includes the development of the terminal to the south, an initiative aimed at improving safety and security conditions. These works will allow the airport to meet the strictest international standards while providing an optimal experience for travelers. Additionally, the project envisions the construction of a hotel for transit passengers, an infrastructure that will enhance Lomé’s appeal to airlines and international travelers.
This modernization is part of a broader strategy to position Togo as a key player in air transport in West Africa. Currently, around ten airlines serve Lomé, but the expansion of the platform could encourage new carriers to include the Togolese capital in their networks. This would not only stimulate air traffic but also boost the local economy by attracting more tourists and investors.
The expansion of Gnassingbé Eyadema International Airport reflects Togo’s commitment to developing modern and competitive infrastructure. By improving reception capacity and enhancing security, this project will help make Lomé a vital logistical and aviation hub in the region. Beyond the numbers, it aims to offer a better experience for travelers and strengthen Togo’s image on the international stage.
