Togo: Ministry of Health calls for vigilance against monkeypox disease (Mpox)
In response to the growing threat of monkeypox, also known as Mpox, Togolese public authorities have strengthened epidemiological surveillance measures across the entire country. Although no cases have been reported yet, vigilance is crucial to protect the nation from this contagious viral disease, especially since it has been declared a public health emergency by Africa CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Monkeypox, well-known for its endemic presence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has recently emerged in several other African countries. The current situation calls for collective action to prevent any spread of this virus. On Thursday, August 15, 2024, the Ministry of Health urged all citizens to strictly observe preventive measures.
It is imperative that everyone adopts simple yet effective preventive behaviors. Regular hand washing with soap and water, covering the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, and avoiding any contact with bodily fluids of suspected individuals are actions that can make a difference. The country’s entry points, including borders and airports, are also under heightened surveillance to ensure early detection of any potential cases.
However, the responsibility to protect oneself does not rest solely on the authorities. Every citizen must act as an information and awareness ambassador. Share preventive messages with those around you, explain the importance of following health guidelines to your loved ones, and encourage them to remain vigilant. Together, we can prevent monkeypox from entering and spreading.
