Togo: President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé’s ambitious policy for agricultural modernization
The agricultural sector remains the cornerstone of the Togolese economy, representing an essential source of employment for over 60% of the active population. In a context of growing challenges related to food security, an increasing population, and the unpredi ctable effects of climate change, President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé has launched an ambitious agricultural modernization policy. This initiative aims not only to meet the food needs of citizens but also to safeguard the country’s food sovereignty.
The ongoing agricultural reforms seek a profound transformation of the sector, integrating modern and sustainable methods, advanced equipment, and improved management of natural resources. These innovations will enhance agricultural yields and mitigate the impact of climate variability that threatens harvests.
To stimulate growth in the sector, the government, under the leadership of President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, is also focusing on strengthening the infrastructure for storing and distributing agricultural products.
The development of agro-food processing infrastructures is part of this strategy, enabling local producers to better enhance their harvests while increasing their capacity to meet local market needs. This integration policy aims to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure a profitable value chain for sector stakeholders.
