Togo: President Faure Gnassingbé’s commitment to food self-sufficiency and rural modernization
In 2024, Togo reached a key milestone in transforming its agricultural sector. Under the leadership of President Faure Gnassingbé, ambitious and innovative measures were implemented to make agriculture a core pillar of sustainable development. These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to building a modern, resilient, and inclusive agricultural economy.
Among the key actions, increased agricultural subsidies allowed small producers to boost their production capacity. These subsidies, focused on inputs, improved seeds, and access to modern equipment, played a crucial role in improving yields and reducing dependence on food imports.
Mechanization also saw unprecedented growth, with initiatives aimed at equipping farmers with modern tools. Cooperatives were created to facilitate the acquisition and maintenance of equipment, thereby reducing the physical strain of agricultural work and increasing productivity.
At the same time, inclusive programs were launched to integrate youth and women into agricultural activities. These initiatives encourage rural entrepreneurship and provide training to enhance the skills of local populations, while addressing climate challenges through the adoption of sustainable farming practices.
With these advancements, Togo is positioning itself as a model in West Africa for its commitment to food self-sufficiency and rural modernization. These consolidated efforts pave the way for an agriculture capable of meeting economic and environmental challenges, while improving the living conditions of rural populations.
