Togo/Counter-terrorism: The contribution of the population recalled
Since 2021, the country has been engaged in a vigorous fight against terrorism, and the population plays a crucial role in this effort. By the second year of the terrorist attacks in the northern part of Togo, Togolese authorities, in collaboration with the national army, established a framework for cooperation between citizens and the Togolese Armed Forces (FAT).
The first step was the reinforcement in 2022 of the “neighborhood policing” concept. This method of cooperation involves bringing police units closer to citizens for more effective security, while the population is expected to continuously provide information to the police and defense forces about suspicious activities and individuals in their living, working, or residential environments.
Launched in 2017, this approach has been strengthened and adapted over the years to better address the insecurity exacerbated by terrorism and violent extremism. In 2022, toll-free numbers were also introduced to facilitate communication between these two crucial entities in the fight against criminal activities.
Following the recent terrorist attacks on a military post in the northern part of the country, the authorities are reminding the population of their duties and responsibilities. While the authorities and combat units are doing everything possible to ensure security, defend the country, and protect the people, it is only fair that the public contributes by sharing all relevant information with the military to better confront the enemy.
According to official information, two toll-free numbers have been made available in each region and are still operational.
