Togo: Togolese government strengthens its fight against gender-based violence with a new centre in Kara
As part of President Faure Gnassingbé’s gender promotion policy, the Togolese government is strengthening its commitment against gender-based violence (GBV) with the opening of a new support center for victims in Kara. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the protection and assistance to GBV victims in Togo.
On June 11, the Director of the Cabinet of the Ministry of Social Action, Kofi Gani, inaugurated the “One Stop Center of Kara”, a modern infrastructure designed to offer comprehensive and integrated care to victims of violence. The creation of this center aligns with the government’s desire to reinforce measures against gender-based violence.
Following the opening of a similar center in Lomé, the One Stop Center in Kara will extend the coverage and effectiveness of support actions for victims across the national territory. This center will provide medical, psychological, social, and legal assistance to affected individuals, ensuring holistic and multidisciplinary care.
It is worth noting that Togo has already implemented several legal frameworks to combat GBV. Among these measures are the Personal and Family Code, the Child Code, and the law aimed at protecting students from sexual violence. These legal texts form a solid legal foundation for the protection of victims’ rights and the sanctioning of perpetrators of violence.
The establishment of the One Stop Center in Kara demonstrates the Togolese government’s ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality and protecting the rights of women and children. This initiative, supported by international partners, illustrates the country’s determination to eradicate gender-based violence.
