Togo: Yikpa waterfall, the largest waterfall in West Africa

On the famous Danyi plateaux, there’s a canton. This canton is Yikpa, the most beautiful tourist site in Togo.

The Yikpa waterfall, around 30 km north of Kpalimé, is the largest waterfall in West Africa. It is divided into two vertiginous 80-metre falls, one in Togo and the other in Ghana (Vli Falls), and the scenery to reach the falls is magnificent, although the climb is sometimes difficult.

The villagers of Yikpa have organised themselves into a waterfall management committee and have created a well-maintained trail. An entry ticket and guide are compulsory, but the welcome is warm.

There are two ways to get there: a two-day hike from Kouma Konda, with a stopover at the Amégapé waterfall and an overnight stay in a village, or transport by vehicle to Yikpa via the Danyi plateau. Togo has many waterfalls to admire.

Yikpa has everything to seduce tourists, and most visitors prefer to climb the mountain to enjoy the natural delights of the waterfall from the top.

The water is cool. An irresistible invitation to swim. A true paradise in a pure, green setting. According to the local inhabitants and elders, Yikpa is under the watchful eye of protective genies.

With so much to offer, tourists are always curious to discover the beauty and virtues of Yikpa. For a party. For relaxation. Or to enjoy the positive vibe of the place and meditate. Even if climbing to the top of the mountains to reach the waterfall is not easy, the hike is well worth it. It’s always a unique experience.

Over the next few years, Yikpa will become a must for nature lovers and scenic enthusiasts. From the sublime panoramic views offered by the Lilidji, Agumatsatodzi and toklevi mountains to the double waterfall over 100 m high on the Agumatsa river, not forgetting the warm welcome and generosity of the villagers, it is often sad and tearful when you say goodbye…
