World Cup 2022: Ghana achieves success and Cameroon recovers

The Black Stars scared themselves against the South Koreans. After leading 2-0 in the 34th minute, Ghana saw South Korea come back to score in the space of three minutes on the hour mark thanks to a double from Cho Gue-sung.

The Ghanaians finally regained the lead in the 68th minute of play following a goal from Mohammed Kudus, his second of the match. Son Heung-min and co. then pushed for an equaliser, but Otto Addo’s men held firm.

This victory allows them to take an option for qualification. However, they will have to beat Uruguay, their tormentor of 2010, in the last match on Friday (15:00 GMT). La Celeste who have only one point after their 2-0 defeat against Portugal.

Earlier in the day, Cameroon came back from far away to hang on to the 3-3 draw against Serbia.

Leading 3-1 after an hour of play, the Indomitable Lions were able to count on goals from Vincent Aboubakar (63rd) and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (66th) in just three minutes to equalize.

“What was important was that determination. We saw an enraged team, while we were led by the score. At half-time, we could believe that it was over but we saw that the players reacted well. We are ramping up,” Rigobert Song said after the game. With a point in the standings, Cameroon can still hope to qualify for the knockout stages; but for that it will take a victory against the Seleçao on the last day of the group stage this Friday (19h GMT) and at the same time, in the best case, a draw between Switzerland and Serbia.

“For the last game against Brazil, we believe. We did not come to the World Cup to make extras, or just to participate, “said the Cameroonian coach, who also returned to the sidelining of AndrĂ© Onana evoking “an important player” but who does not correspond to the mentality of the team. “You have to have some discipline and when you don’t meet those criteria of discipline, you have to take responsibility.”The second day of the group stage is in any case over for the African teams who will have shown beautiful things. Senegal, Morocco and Ghana, winners of their respective matches, are all able to qualify for the knockout stages.

For Cameroon and Tunisia, the situation is more complicated but nothing is done yet. One thing is certain, the 2022 World Cup is currently doing better for teams on the continent than the 2018 one, where no team made it past the first round.
