Benin is strengthening its international tourism profile after receiving nominations in four categories at the 2026 Africa Tourism Awards. The recognition highlights the country’s cultural heritage, tourism potential and promotional efforts.
First, Benin is competing for Destination of the Year and Cultural Destination of the Year. Its national tourism promotion agency, Benin Tourism, is also nominated for Tourism Board of the Year. Additionally, the promotional film “Explore Benin, A World of Wonders” is competing for Tourism Video of the Year.
Furthermore, these nominations come as Benin expands its international tourism campaign. The country is promoting historical and cultural attractions, including Ouidah, a major site connected to the history of the transatlantic slave trade and Vodun traditions. The Royal Palaces of Abomey, recognized by UNESCO, are another important attraction. Ganvié, a lakeside settlement often called the “Venice of Africa”, also features prominently in the country’s tourism offer.
Meanwhile, Benin is promoting coastal destinations such as Grand-Popo. Its tourism strategy also focuses on cultural discovery, living traditions, heritage sites and local experiences.
The competition includes several African destinations. In the Destination of the Year category, Benin faces nominees including Angola, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Namibia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe are among its competitors for Cultural Destination of the Year.
Finally, public voting remains open until October 29 and accounts for 20% of the final score. A panel of experts and the Africa Tourism Awards jury will determine the remaining 80%. Winners are scheduled to be announced in London on November 1.
These four nominations offer Benin an opportunity to increase its visibility and strengthen its position as a leading cultural tourism destination in Africa.
