President Ibrahim Traoré opened the 18th edition of the Ouagadougou International Craft Fair (SIAO) on Friday, 30 October 2026, launching a event running until 8 November that is billed as one of Africa’s leading showcases for creativity and craftsmanship.
The opening ceremony brought together senior figures including Ousmane Bougouma, president of the People’s Legislative Assembly, members of governments from the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), and Ghana’s minister of crafts. Diplomats and craft sector actors from across Africa and beyond are also attending.
This year’s theme « African crafts and industrialisation: what synergies for better organisation and promotion of local products and cultural heritage? » focuses on the role of crafts in the continent’s structural transformation. Discussions will explore how to move from traditional artisanal production to a competitive, structured creative industry.
Ghana is the guest of honour, while Mali and Niger are among the special guests. Their presence reflects efforts to strengthen exchanges among African countries and promote a regional dynamic around local products and cultural heritage.
Beyond exhibitions, SIAO aims to build concrete bridges between artisans, investors, institutions and decision-makers. The goal is to improve market access, support innovation and strengthen crafts’ contribution to national and continental economies.
For Burkina Faso, hosting the event reflects a clear ambition to make culture and local know-how drivers of development.
